Cartoon

I was asked to direct a cartoon narrated by a recording of the late Rabbi Noach Weinberg z"l. Unable to invest the necessary budget for a full cartoon, we decided to hire an illustrator to draw images of each shot of the movie. Each drawing had between 2 and 4 layers of images divided by images in the foreground, mid-ground, and background. I then brought the layers into Motion and animated camera moves on the images. By putting distance between the layers (like in real life there is distance between the objects we see closer to us and farther from us), the camera moves give a sense of depth you can't get in ordinary drawings. It's basically 3D animation... without the animation.

If none of that made sense (and even if it did) I'm posting my favorite shot below. In the foreground are the bars of the prison cell. The next layer back is the man in red, his cell, and the window. Farther back is the dock and the man in green climbing aboard his boat. And even farther back is the clouds and sunset. Thanks to Jacky Yarhi for the wonderful drawing.
